Dress Patterns

Designed for those who want to make a start with dressmaking, these courses are aimed at beginners and will introduce you to the essentials of fashion sewing, taking you through various techniques and applying them to the process of making a simple garment from a shop bought pattern. It is essential that you are guided by your tutor as to the garment you make so that it can be accomplished within the course.

NOTE. Some fashion courses will be suitable for improvers too. please ask for details

Learners will become familiar with:

  • Taking accurate measurements
  • Choosing and understanding a pattern
  • Estimating fabric requirements
  • Cutting out, constructing and finishing a garment
  • Hand sewing techniques

Some outlay will be required for this course. You will need a sewing kit which should include the following; dressmaking shears, pins, tape measure, tacking thread, tailors chalk, hand sewing needles provide a pattern, thread etc. to construct your garment, and you will need a sewing machine that you are familiar with.

We now have a small number of machines available to hire for the duration of the course, please ask for details.

Tea and coffee will be provided at all classes.

What to bring: To the first class, bring a pad and pen and your sewing kit.

Note – if you have no previous sewing experience, it would be a good idea to do the ‘Starting to Sew’ class prior to embarking on this course as it is for beginners to dressmaking and not beginners to sewing it’s self.
